If slicing onions leaves you fighting to see through the tears, things might be about to change.

Yes, prepare to dry those eyes for Sunions™: America’s first tearless onions are here!

The culmination of three decades of work have come to fruition in this altogether milder onion, which the producers claim is not genetically modified but the result of a natural cross-bred method.

“This onion is the product of more than 30 years of research and development to produce an onion that actually decreases in pungency during storage,” said Sunions breeder Rick Watson.

What do they taste like?

Sunions claim the onion is both milder, sweeter over time. The team over at Food and Winehave put them to the test and do report a sweetness, although far less pronounced than the pioneering tearless factor.

Sunions are currently grown in Idaho, Nevada, and Washington and sold at select groceries in the US. Although, Bayer, the company behind Sunions, have plans to expand their growing capabilities arriving on British soil in the future, so don't expect a dry eye in the house just yet.
