LATIN AMERICA'S 50 BEST RESTAURANTS 2017 – THE FULL LIST

The Maido restaurant in Lima, Peru, run by the charismatic chef Mitsuharu Tsumura, has been announced as the best restaurant in Latin America at the Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants awards held in Bogotá, Colombia.

Speaking to a packed house, Tsumura said: “I want to thank all the team at Maido – I know they’re watching – I thank everyone because without them it wouldn't be possible. I have list of friends here in the crowd. Thanks to everyone who has supported us and been with us all these years.” He also used the opportunity to pay homage to chef Carlos Garcîa in Venezuela as the crowd erupted in applause for support of a chef who has been through social, cultural and political turmoil as of late.

Second place on the night also went to Peru with the Central restaurant in Lima, operated by husband and wife duo Virgilio Martinez and Pía León, dropping down from first position – a spot they had held for three years consecutively.

Third place went to D.O.M in Brazil, while fourth place went to Pujol in Mexico and fifth position went to Borago in Chile.

Latin America’s Best Pastry chef went to Saiko Izawa from Brazil, the Chef’s Choice award, the only award selected by the chefs in the audience, was presented to Germán Martitegui.
