The LA Times’s Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold has just unveiled his annual list of the 101 best restaurants in Los Angeles.

Topping the list is the city’s most talked about new restaurant, Vespertine, chef Jonathan Kahn’simmersive tasting menu experience, which Gold, in a recent review, described as one of the city’s “first leaps into the avant-garde,” where “you may as well be on Jupiter.” Gold didn’t quite know what to make of it when he visited, but obviously enjoyed it enough for it to top his list. Other critics have not been so impressed.

Second is renowned Hollywood seafood spot Providence, which had topped Gold’s list for the previous four years straight, followed by Spago, chef Wolfgang Puck’s Beverly Hills institution.
