The world's largest vertical farm is set to open in Dubai in December 2019. The farm will be housed in a 130,000 square-foot facility and use 99% less water than traditional farming methods

This is great news for the United Arab Emirates, as the country imports about 85 percent of its food and only a small percentage of its land is arable, according to CNN.

The massive vertical farm is a $40 million joint venture between Emirates Flight Catering and agri-tech company Crop One Holdings. The produce from the farm will be used for in-flight meals on Emirates.

How Will The Vertical Farm Work?

Crop One Holdings has announced the farm will use hydroponics to produce leafy greens. Nutrients will be mixed in a water solution that circulates through the plant's roots, according to Modern Farmer.

The farm will rely on LED lights but plans to go solar by 2050 in an effort to make it more sustainable.

MORE ABOUT VERTICAL FARMING

Vertical farming is popular in places where agricultural space is limited or the land isn't ideal for farming.

Singapore is ahead of the curve thanks to its first vertical farm. In cities like Chicago old warehouses have been turned into zero-waste vertical farms.
