A British cheese has been named as the world's best cheese at the annual World Cheese Awardsheld in London.

Cornish Kern, a hard, cow's milk cheese from the Southwest of England beat hundreds of cheeses from around the world to claim the title of World Champion Cheese, as judged by a panel of journalists, producers and all round cheese experts.

The cheese, produced by Lynher Dairies, which is matured for 16 months and derived originally from a Gouda, is described as "buttery ... with caramel notes and a deep savoury aroma."

As Eater London reports, the West of England has dominated the competition, staged by The Guild of Fine Food, recently, producing a winning cheese three times over the past seven years.

Last year's best cheese in the world was Kraftkar, a Norwegian blue cheese.

Watch the moment Cornish Kern was announced as the world's best cheese, and further down, why not take our cheese quiz – can you name all 10 European cheeses?
