COOKING TIPS: HOW TO MAKE GUACAMOLE

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE GUACAMOLE

Homemade guacamole is always a crowd pleaser. Whether you whip up a batch for a simple get together for game day or a big Cinco de Mayo fiesta there's no doubt everyone loves the rich, buttery taste of guacamole.

If you are interested in making guacamole from scratch then follow the easy recipe we share below for this Mexican favorite.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE GUACAMOLE?

Guacamole is at its best when prepared with Hass avocados. You'll easily recognize them as they are small in size with dark skin and creamy interior.

To make guacamole for 4 people you'll need:

  • 3 Hass avocados
  • the juice of one lime
  • 3 tbsp cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 jalapeño pepper, deseeded and finely diced
  • 1 tbsp white onion, finely diced
  • 1 roma tomato, finely diced

Using a molcajete (Mexican mortar and pestle) or a fork grind together the white onion, jalapeño and 1 tbsp of cilantro to form a paste.

Peel and dice the avocado. Combine with the chili paste. Add tomato, salt, remaining cilantro and lime juice. Mix and serve immediately.

Here is another guacamole recipe you can make in a blender.

BENEFITS OF GUACAMOLE

Food that does a body good? Guacamole is one of them thanks to avocados.

Avocados are high in fiber and minerals like potassium and magnesium. They are also a great source of vitamin C, B6 and A. The best part? They are loaded with unsaturated fats (the good kind).

HOW TO KEEP GUACAMOLE FRESH

The best way to keep guacamole fresh is to consume it immediately. Of course, that's not always possible so the next best thing is to sprinkle it with fresh lime juice and cover it with plastic. Keep it refrigerated until serving time.

Alternatively, you can freeze guacamole in ice trays and thaw before serving. Surprisingly, this method works really well.
