MAN SUES AIRLINE FOR SERVING SPARKLING WINE INSTEAD OF CHAMPAGNE
PHOTO LACHLAN HARDY/FLICKRA man is suing a low cost Canadian airline after being served sparkling wine when he says he was promised Champagne.
As reported by the BBC, Daniel Macduff, who was flying from Quebec to Cuba on Sunwing, booked a ticket on the promise of a complimentary ‘Champagne toast,’ but on boarding the plane was disappointed to be served a sparkling wine that wasn’t from France’s famous Champagne region.
The lawsuit, which is yet to be certified by the courts, is seeking “compensation for the monetary difference between the actual wine served and a glass of champagne as well as punitive damages.” Thus far around1600 people have also joined as plaintiffs.
A lawyer for Mr Macduff said, “It's not about the pettiness of champagne versus sparkling wine … It's the consumer message behind it,” accusing the airline of misleading marketing.
In response, Sunwing has said that the claims are “frivolous and without merit" and that the use of the word ‘Champagne’ was merely to denote a level of service, but has since removed all reference to it on its website and now promises flyers a “Welcome glass of Sparkling wine.”
Whatever the outcome, it's certainly taken the fizz out of flying Sunwing for Mr Macduff.
