The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

1. Love Thy Neighbour. Seriously.

Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke [reason with] thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord." (Leviticus 19: 17-18)

This pretty much means that every single Westboro Baptist Church protest is inherently Un-Christian.

The Westboro Baptist Church, based in Topeka, Kansas has clearly forgotten this guideline, which is much more explicit than anti-homosexual Biblical references. The church is famous for being a hate group that protests at homosexuals' funerals and has nothing but contempt for any other religion besides its own. The church is using technology to hate on homosexuals through their website, godhatesf*gs.com and has a travel budget of over $200,000 to picket and disrupt funerals all over the country.

They protest military funerals (protest in their context actually means "harass") and make one of the worst days of these people's lives even worse. This is what they do as a primary form of "activism."

The scariest part is that these people actually procreate. They have kids holding up hateful signs and they teach their children the opposite of Christian values.

They have effectively made hate speech accepted and legal by slapping the word "church" on their group, which is probably the smartest thing they've ever done.

But if The Lord says love they neighbor, then what book are they reading?

How to Use:
Simply bring up the fact that all hate speech is inherently Unchristian.

2. Divorce and Remarrying Are Both Considered Adultery

Divorce and Remarrying Are Bot... is listed (or ranked) 2 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery." (Luke 16:18)

Okay, so no church should ever marry people who have already been married if this is the rule.

If anyone in a fundamentalist's family has ever been divorced or re-married, then they are going to hell.

Most people don't observe this rule because it clearly says in The Bible that you can pick and choose which rules you follow (it doesn't.)

How to Use:
According to this passage, all members of the congregation that have been divorced and/or remarried would be sinners and should be kicked out of the church. With a 50% divorce rate in America, it's safe to say that people are selectively ignoring this rule, yet somehow still seeing themselves as "pious."  Just because you're not deeply religious does not mean you're not a good person, and what people are really effectively doing in ignoring certain rules of Christianity is not only proving that exact point, but proving that they believe it.

3. Even A Look Counts As Adultery

Even A Look Counts As Adultery is listed (or ranked) 3 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." (Matthew 5:28)

It's pretty safe to say every adult (and God knows, every teenager), has committed adultery by this standard.

Being attracted to the opposite gender is part of humanity. Law in Western society only prosecutes bad actions -- not bad thoughts, but that's not the way it's supposed to go.

How to Use:
Bring around some pictures from Men's Health for the women and some Maxim, perhaps some Playboy, for the men. Get them to look at it and give you an opinion. Most of the time, they will have lustful descriptions and will think nothing of it when they're really violated a cut and dry part of what is supposed to be their belief system. Feel free to shout things like "ADULTERER!" after Gerard Butler and Jessica Alba have made everyone into adequate sinners.

4. Men With Wounded or Missing Male Parts Are Not Allowed in Church

Men With Wounded or Missing Ma... is listed (or ranked) 4 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord."(Deuteronomy 23:1)

First of all, yes, the King James Bible actually calls them "stones." You are now aware of the fact that the "stones" euphemism is a Biblical reference.

Also, God hates people with testicular cancer, apparently.

If it wasn't already bad enough that these poor dudes have wounded stones and members, it turns out that if they choose to practice proper Christianity they can never go to church again? That's balls.

So the context of this passage is actually that people should be without blemish and should generally be "perfect" so that they can procreate well and contribute to the Lord's congregation by being fruitful and multiplying, so it makes sense that having a working pair of stones is necessary... it's just pretty brutal if you have no control over losing your "stones."

How to Use:
Either way, if someone ever tries to debate that "we are all God's children" kindly remind them that if you're in any way missing your goods, you're pretty much screwed. If you have testicular cancer, according to The Bible, you really shouldn't bother praying for yourself.

Also, new rule: according to this rule, if someone kicks you in the balls in church, in addition to being in extreme pain, in order to be polite, you have to walk all the way outside until the pain subsides (and rises to your stomach.)

5. No Bastards May Enter the Church

No Bastards May Enter the Chur... is listed (or ranked) 5 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"A bitched shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the Lord." (Deuteronomy 23:2)

A bitched is someone who was born outside of wedlock, which means you were born before your parents were married. Being born out of wedlock makes you filthy, apparently; so filthy in fact that it takes ten genetic steps down the line to wash how filthy it makes you.

So your family's 100% awesome to come to church in like a century or two if you're a bitched, which I guess is fair.

Wait, but what if your dad abandoned you and your mom after she had given birth to you... that means you're going to be held responsible and deprived of God's love... which...

Wow, this means that Christian orphanages are hypocritical institutions if they're taking these kids to church. Brutal.

How to Use:
After bringing up the point about orphanages, it's time to take a survey of the church just to make sure there aren't evil, lurking, dirty bitches in there ruining the holy juice for everyone.

6. Women Will Never Teach or Have Authority Over Men

Women Will Never Teach or Have... is listed (or ranked) 6 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"I permit no woman to teach or have authority over men; she is to keep silent." Timothy 2:11

This is the most often quoted version of this passage, but in The King James Bible, it goes a little bit more like this...

"Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection." which has been translated and taken as the primary passage that doesn't allow women to be preachers. The whole section is really about women not being able to "malign the word of God" if they're not allowed to speak.

Keep in mind the first "big bad" antagonist in The Bible is women, as a gender.

So, since some woman allegedly bit into a delicious looking fruit at some point thousands of years ago, best to attribute one action to an entire gender (just to be safe.)

While this is a little brutal, bringing up this passage to someone who looks like these fine ladies to your left will most likely shut them up (or at the very least garner a really interesting response.)

All women holding up hateful signs are officially moot in the eyes of God, much like they are in the eyes of the rational, so hey, there's a good side to this rule.

7. Discipline Your Little Ones

Discipline Your Little Ones is listed (or ranked) 7 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." (Psalm 137:9)

The Bible encourages disciplining your child... by throwing him against a stone wall, baby!

Doing so will apparently make you "happy" (if you're a sadistic psychopath, or if you hate your children.)

This is a dangerous encouragement of violence against helpless children and if followed, could easily be used to justify parents who shake their kids to death to make them stop crying or for simply just child abuse.

How to Use:
So next time someone's trying to prove that every passage of The Bible is beautiful and should be closely followed, ask them if they beat their kids.

8. Women Must Cover Their Hair During Prayer

Women Must Cover Their Hair Du... is listed (or ranked) 8 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head..." 1 Corinthians 11:5

Wait, so why the hell wasn't I allowed to wear hats in church?

Fundamentalist Christian women seem to have forgotten this basic rule of church attire reminiscent of Islam. The Bible should have clarified what it means to dishonoureth one's head. Most women walk around with their hair uncovered in all styles in modern society and men aren't having too much trouble keeping it in their pants.

How to Use
Mary always wore a veil... why shouldn't they?

9. Giving Birth to a Daughter Makes You Unclean for 66 Days

Giving Birth to a Daughter Mak is listed (or ranked) 9 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists
Photo: uploaded by Ivana Wynn
"But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days." (Leviticus 12:5)

People should hold signs that say "God Hates Women" because it really will be the most accurate Christian sign you could ever make.

God made the one thing women were actually appreciated for, the ability to give birth to life, a dirty act.

When women give birth to their children at the hospital now, they are immediately handed their child because that's what you want to do when you pop out a kid after carrying it for nine months in your belly -- not go through 66 days of church-mandated shame.

How to Use:
Next time one of your devout relatives or someone who always thinks they're right during religious debates has a daughter, politely bring up the fact that in the eyes of God, the mother is a dirty whore who needs to wait 66 days before being allowed anywhere near anything clean ever again. She should probably also shower regularly.

10. If Your Brother Dies, You Need to Bang His Wife

If Your Brother Dies, You Need is listed (or ranked) 10 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother." (Mark 12:19)

Moses, the prophet who delivered his fellow Jews from a wicked Egyptian tyrant and led them across the parted Red Sea, had apparently told this speaker that if a woman is widowed, her late husband's brother should sleep with her and produce heirs for his brother. From a traveling crowd of people that were homeless for 40 years, this actually makes sense... but not so much for this day and age.

Picture that -- a grieving widow is visited by her husband's brother to have intercourse the night of the funeral.

How to Use:
repopulating simply to have heirs doesn't exist as a valid concept anymore. Plenty of couples are choosing not to reproduce at all and with a recession and climate crisis on our hands, they're doing the world a favour. If this rule has been allowed to become obsolete, why not others that ruin people's lives?

11. If You Disobey God, You Will Eat Your Babies

If You Disobey God, You Will E is listed (or ranked) 11 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

If in spite of this you still do not listen to me but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger I will be hostile toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over. 29 You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters."(Leviticus 26:27-30)

If you break even a single one of these rules, you need to eat your children. Doesn't matter how old they are, doesn't matter what you do, but if you disobey God and his ways, he's going to wreak some serious havoc.

In this part of Leviticus, it's really God making a bunch of threats rules and maybe he just got a little out of hand, but yes, he says that if you disobey him, he's gonna make you eat your kids.

How to Use:
You might as well put on the Food Network, get some good recipes ready and hand them to someone next time a Christian fundamentalist tries to pull their piety card out. If they're not following this rule, then why follow rules that allow hate towards people different than they are?

12. Non-Virgins Are To Be Stoned (As in, with Rocks)

Non-Virgins Are To Be Stoned ( is listed (or ranked) 12 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you." (Deuteronomy 22: 20-21)

The "father's house" in Paris Hilton's case would be any Hilton hotel, so we know that if fundamentalists were really taking everything the way "God" intended, then it should be a well-known and widespread Christian agenda to call for the public stoning of Paris Hilton.

Also, there are edge-cases where if a little girl has an accident or is injured during sports, The Bible says they should be stoned to death.

It's pretty well known that it's entirely possible (and not at all irregular) for a young woman's hymen to be accidentally broken due to accidents or even playing certain sports like gymnastics.

This also means that in order to enforce a rule like this, we'd need to have regular "Hymen Checks" at churches, but we don't, because we're human beings and we're trying to live in a little thing called "society." So then why let this one slide and not things like gay marriage?

13. Cursing At Your Parents Warrants Death

Cursing At Your Parents Warran is listed (or ranked) 13 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death: he hath cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be upon him." (Leviticus 20:9)

If every kid in America who cursed at his parents was killed, we'd have to worry about repopulating the country. Every day.

So, really all you'll have to do to silence any screaming protester outside an abortion clinic, military funeral, or even a family member that's being a little too smug about their religious beliefs is ask them how their parents are doing.

The context of this forgotten rule is all part of Christianity's established hierarchy, which gives parents absolute power over their children, and all men power over women. So if you're a father, you really have more power than pretty much everyone on earth except God.

How to Use:
Try bringing this up in front of a man's wife or children, see how that goes.

14. A Woman's Punishment For Defending Her Husband = Cut Off Her Hand

A Woman's Punishment For Defen is listed (or ranked) 14 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"When men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth near for to deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth forth her hand, and taketh him by the secrets: Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pity her." (Deuteronomy 25:11-12)

Okay this one is insanely specific, which makes it that much more awesome. This probably NEVER happens... but if a faithful wife decided to defend her husband by grabbing a guy by his junk, anyone, would have God's blessing to cut her hand off.

How to Use:
Alright, so in the extremely rare case that you might witness something like this happening and you know everyone involved is a devout Christian, then politely recommend the woman's hand be cut off -- just to save her (and them) from an eternity of Hell-fire.

And once again, here's another rule that illustrates the point that if people were better Christians, we'd have a lot more handless people walking around. If people were much better Christians, then pirate hook sales would go through the roof (and we'd probably have designer hooks as a driving force of our economy.)

15. Deformed People Cannot Approach God

"For whatsoever man he be that hath a blemish, he shall not approach: a blind man, or a lame, or he that hath a flat nose, or any thing superfluous, Or a man that is brokenfooted, or brokenhanded, Or crookbackt, or a dwarf, or that hath a blemish in his eye, or be scurvy, or scabbed, or hath his stones broken. No man that hath a blemish of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the Lord made by fire: he hath a blemish; he shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God." (Leviticus 21:18-21)

Apparently, God reads US Weekly and takes it to heart. Although since he is all knowing and all powerful, then that also means that he reads every magazine ever written.

So it theoretically isn't an untrue statement that yes, God reads Out Magazine.

According to The Bible, people who are born with or acquire defects throughout their lives should not approach the altar of a Church to make an offering to God because they "hath a blemish."

Christians are always saying God loves everyone but this list of "or"s excludes a whole group of people who actually have no control over what they look like most of the time.

From something as superficial as a flat nose to once again with the "broken stones" (Women may be inferior in God's eyes, but he sure knows how to make a man feel worthless.)

Congrats God, you've found a way to hold every disabled and unprotected person responsible for things out of their control and make them feel like crap about it.

How to Use:
If there's even one disabled person with a serious physical problem or deformity in the church, you need to remind the church goers that he needs to be removed if anyone's going to get any kind of legitimate praying, singing and donating done.

16. No Intercourse During A Woman's Period

No Intercourse During A Woman& is listed (or ranked) 16 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists
Photo: uploaded by Ivana Wynn
"...thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her uncleanness." (Leviticus 18:19)

No, this doesn't mean that guys aren't allowed around chicks that don't shower. That's fine (according to The Bible.) It means that when a woman is going through her "woman times" a man is not allowed to "approach" her, which in Biblespeak means intercourse -- much like "knowing" does.

This passage forbids men from sleeping with a woman on her period, which in the Bible is known as "uncleanness." That uncleanness is of course the means to human reproduction and has been known as the bane of female existence for causing monthly cramps, breakouts, mood swings and mass destruction.

Now, this is one to bring up to women because although a lot of people follow this rule anyway just for "hygienic" reasons (it's really hygienically fine, but some people are a little squeamish about blood), it's really a Bible passage telling men to stay away, and actively avoid women during a time in which they should probably be nurtured the most.

Now we've uncovered the secret mission of the Bible: pit men against women. Forever.

How to Use:

17. If You Steal Something, or Sin in Any Way: Cut Off Your Hand

If You Steal Something, or Sin is listed (or ranked) 17 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched." (Mark 9:43)

If your irresponsible hand reaches out all on its own to steal some sunglasses or touch another man's wife, the Bible requires you to cut it off. End of story. No more video games that aren't Atari.

How to Use:
So next time someone tells you that you're going to hell, ask them if they're free of sin, and if they believe that they aren't, then kindly request their hand. It's their duty to give it to you. Kind of like in that one SNL skit where Chris Farley gets on a Japanese game-show, where everyone has to cut their hands off when they get wrong answers.

18. Give A Thief Your Belongings

Give A Thief Your Belongings is listed (or ranked) 18 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also." (Matthew 5:40)

This passage feels like the one above, but it kind of has a twist. If someone steals something from you, you should hand over something else too. It's like a steal one-get one handed right to you offer.

How to Use:
Passages like these make it seem like God didn't honestly grant his followers free will and in reality wants to turn them into obedient and mindless robots who can't think for themselves. Either way, a good way to test this would be to steal something from a Christian and see if you get even more out of it.

19. Your Family Is Your Enemy and You Are All Competing for God's Love

Your Family Is Your Enemy and  is listed (or ranked) 19 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me." (Matthew 10:35-27)

So believing in God, according to the Bible, is like a life-or-death game of Family Double Dare, only instead of having colour-coded teams it's every man (woman and child) for themselves.

How to Use:
So next time someone says "family first" it's probably them tricking you into loving God less than you should, just so you'll go to hell and they won't. So, according to The Bible every time a mother tells her child that family is the most important thing in the world, they're really condemning their child to an eternity of fire, brimstone and suffering. So, once again, all you need to do to prove this point in front of anyone is really just to ask them about their family and what's most important to them.

20. Invite Your Attacker To Beat You More

Invite Your Attacker To Beat You more is listed (or ranked) 20 on the list The Top 20 Bible Passages to Use Against Fundamentalists

"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also." (Matthew 5:39)

Really? "Please sir, may I have another?" is a Biblical rule? I thought it was just an S&M command.

How to Use
Passivity may be better than war and violence, but inviting someone to continue beating you seems a bit much. The best way to test this, of course, would be to openly attack someone and see if they pull a "please sir, may I have another?"

Caviar Types and Varieties

A Concise Caviar Guide

Caviar is processed, salted fish roe, eggs. There are several caviar types and many varieties of fish that contribute to this ancient gourmet treat.

True caviar, gourmet caviar, however, comes from sturgeon only, primarily Beluga, Osetra, and Sevruga sturgeons. Every species of sturgeon, however, is on the endangered species list. The largest remaining deposit of sturgeon is in the Caspian Sea, shared by Russian and Iranian producers, where 85% of today's wild caviar originates.

Caviar from any other source than sturgeon must be designated by the fish it comes from, such as 'salmon caviar' or 'paddlefish caviar.' If it just says 'caviar' on the container, it's from sturgeon, or should be.

How Caviar is Rated

Fine caviar is rated according to...

  • the size and colour of its roe
  • its method of processing
  • Colour is designated by...
  • 000 for light caviar
  • 00 for medium
  • 0 for dark

Very light or golden roe is also designated 'Imperial' caviar or 'Royal' caviar, and was once reserved only for royalty.

The best caviar is commonly understood to be sturgeon caviar, with the largest roe and the lightest colour. This thinking is changing, though, as more people discover the delicious and less expensive alternatives to wild sturgeon that are available. Indeed, expensive caviars are not priced by taste, but rarity. The "best tasting caviar" is up to you.

Caviar Types

There are 4 caviar types, that is, four processing methods.

First is the Malossol method, preferred by connoisseurs. Malossol means 'little salt' or 'lightly salted' and refers to fresh caviar with less than 5% salt. Modern fresh caviar often has much less, about 3.5%. The term is sometimes used to describe any high quality caviar, though.

The second caviar type and quality is Salted Caviar, sometimes called 'semi-preserved' caviar. It contains up to 8% salt. The more salt, the longer the shelf life, but taste may be compromised.

Pressed Caviar is next in quality. Made from too-soft, damaged, broken and overly ripe eggs, it is treated, highly salted, and pressed to a jam-like consistency. Once the only method available for preserving caviar, this is still the favorite of many connoisseurs for its strong, concentrated flavor.

The last of the caviar types is Pasteurized Caviar. Fresh caviar is heat-treated and vacuum packed in glass jars for much longer preservation. Both taste and texture may be affected.

Varieties of Caviar

Black Caviar

Beluga Caviar

Beluga is the world's most expensive caviar, next to exceedingly rare Sterlet. Its roe is very large, ranging in colour from black to pale grey, and has a smooth, buttery flavour.

Fewer than 100 Beluga sturgeon are caught each year.

Osetra Caviar

Also spelled, Ossetra, Oscietra, or Asestra. This caviar consists of medium-sized eggs, ranging in colour from dark brown to light grey and even golden brown. Many prefer Osetra's nutty, slightly fruity flavour over Beluga.

Sevruga Caviar

The Sevruga sturgeon produces the smallest roe of the three main caviar varieties. More plentiful than the other two, it is also the least expensive. Its roe is black to very light grey in colour and, like Beluga, it has a buttery flavour, but saltier, richer, and more intense. It's unique flavour is highly valued.

Tasty, Less Expensive Alternatives

Farmed Caviar Few realize that the United States used to produce about 90% of the world's caviar. It was so plentiful that it was served in saloons like pretzels are today. As supply dwindled, however, so did production. The U.S. and more than a dozen other countries in similar circumstances have begun sturgeon farming operations to preserve both the species and the industry. Commonly farmed varieties are Osetra, Baerii, and White Sturgeon.

People should live as well as farm-raised sturgeon. They swim in artesian well water, are fed the ideal, toxin-free diet, and have no predators. Of course, they do give their all for the cause in the end. Their roe is harvested at the ideal time for premium quality caviar. For consumers it all means a consistently high quality, lower-priced caviar, not from endangered stock. Try it.

American Caviar

Sometimes misleadingly used to refer to any caviar from America, it actually refers to American lake sturgeon as opposed to Caspian Sea sturgeon. (There's an old story in my family about a fisherman, a small fishing boat, a sturgeon, and a long, long ride up and down the river.) Its roe is very similar in characteristics to Caspian Sevruga caviar.

Paddlefish Caviar

With its clear, glossy beads, buttery flavour, and steel grey to light or even golden-grey roe, this is a good substitute for Beluga caviar. It is sometimes marketed as American caviar.

Hackleback Caviar

This caviar combines the sweet, nutty, and buttery characteristics of other caviar. Its roe is a rich, glossy black colour of medium size, firm.

Bowfin Caviar

This caviar, more commonly known by its Cajun name, Chou piqué, is considered another of the better substitutes for Beluga. It has a distinctively sturgeon essence, with a mild flavour and firm, black beads, although smaller in size than Beluga.

Salmon Caviar

This bright golden-orange or reddish-orange caviar is the favourite of sushi chefs everywhere. Its juicy medium to large sized roe, even larger than Beluga, has a distinctive popping characteristic in the mouth and a fairly intense salmon flavour. And because salmon have scales, salmon caviar is considered a kosher food.

Whitefish Caviar

This is small-grained, almost crunchy caviar of the salmon family, with a distinctive natural golden colour and mild flavours. Another favourite of chefs, Whitefish roe is sometimes infused with ginger, truffle or saffron flavours for added interest.

Trout Caviar

This is interesting caviar, said to be good enough to eat off the spoon. It has large, golden-orange beads and a subtle flavour. It has a nice 'pop' like salmon roes.

Lumpfish Caviar

This is a very inexpensive yet versatile caviar from cold, Nordic waters, surprisingly good-tasting. It has a very fine-grained, crunchy roe and intense briny flavour that is ideal for appetisers and garnishes. It comes in black and red, and is one of the pasteurised caviar types.

(Some caviar's are dyed a uniform colour; be sure to gently rinse these before using in a recipe.)

Capelin Caviar

A tiny-grained roe similar to lumpfish, but chewy. Choose red or black varieties. This one is also pasteurized and artificially coloured.

Understanding A Person With Sociopathology

Understanding A Person With Sociopathology

Understand genetic heritability.

While it can be hard to accept, as much as 50% of sociopathology can be attributed to heredity, meaning it can be passed on genetically. People with sociopathic traits are born with tendencies to act the way they do.

Just like a child doesn’t choose to be born into an impoverished family, an individual does not chose to be born predisposed to an inability to relate to others like ‘normal’ people do.

Realize environmental factors.

While a history of childhood abuse is present for many people with sociopathic traits, it does not represent all individuals who express these tendencies. Generally, individuals who express sociopathic traits tend to receive a diagnosis of conduct disorder in childhood or adolescence, and often express behavioral difficulties such as aggression, deceitfulness, and destruction.
Children diagnosed with conduct disorder often have histories of having a dysfunctional family, traumatic experiences, family history of substance abuse, and inconsistent discipline within the home.

Recognize differences in experience.

While it’s easy to be upset with someone in your life that appears to have sociopathic tendencies, remember that this person does not experience the love and trust that most people experience. Imagine a life of not experiencing the butterflies of being around someone you romantically love, or knowing how to fully trust loved ones and friends. These individuals also likely do not feel the connection of friendship that most people consider ‘normal.

Sadly, these individuals do not even know what they are missing in these experiences, having perhaps never experienced healthy trust or love, given or received.

Understand what motivates the individual.

Because these individuals often lack the ability to empathize with others, they tend to be invested in self-interest. They may tend to be hypervigilant in meeting their own needs, with no attachment to other people. It is likely they do not have the skills to approach the world in any other way, so life is about taking care of the self and only the self.
Because there is no apparent benefit to helping others or treating others with respect, no action is taken to help or improve the lives of others.

Helping Someone With Sociopathic Tendencies

Have empathy.

While these people often are the source of a lot of frustration, pain, and hurt, remember that they are human, too. Despite these people often being very hard to love, it is for this reason they are in special need of empathy, care, and respect.

Do not excuse negative behaviour, but be willing to share love and compassion with a fellow human.
Many people that grow up to show sociopathic tendencies were subjected to childhood verbal, physical and/or sexual abuse. Many experienced chaotic or unstable families while growing up, or the loss of a parent. While this is not an excuse for behavior, it can allow you to have compassion on a person who has had a difficult or traumatic childhood and had to find other less-adaptive ways to survive.

Remember, however, that sociopaths are completely aware of their behavior and effects on others. An abusive past is not an excuse for bad behavior.

Also be careful in what a sociopath says about their past if it cannot be confirmed. Sociopaths will often lie or blur the truth about themselves, and stating they were abused or dealt with trauma can be used to garner sympathy.

Note that you need to have firm, appropriate boundaries. For most people, the way to fully heal damage to a relationship is to trust again. However, with sociopaths that may be very unwise. Forgive and move on, but be careful not to put yourself in a situation where you can be very vulnerable. While sociopaths do not necessarily cause harm, because they do not feel remorse, guilt, or the like, there is a high likelihood they will repeat the hurtful behaviour.

Showing empathy and forgiveness is good...but keep in mind that acting in such a way will not in any way mean they will feel any remorse, guilt, or have a change of heart at all.

Avoid enabling.

This is especially hard if a person with sociopathic tendencies is in your family. You want to love and accept the person, but without enabling them to hurt or manipulate other people. Let the person know you are unwilling to enable their lifestyle or contribute to them hurting other people.
Say, “I want to support you, but I cannot contribute to you hurting other people.”

If the person is recklessly spending money and then cannot afford rent and asks to stay with you, be careful in saying “yes”. Housing this person may enable them to spend money on drugs or other harmful items, and may cause added stress to your life and living situation.
Avoid giving money to a person. If they ask for money, offer to buy groceries or contribute to rent if you feel inclined to help.

It can be difficult to see someone destroy their life and hurt other people, but remember that those are their decisions and you are not responsible for them.

Set clear boundaries in your relationship. A person may try to push boundaries or manipulate you or the relationship.

Let the person know what you are available for and what you are unavailable for. This will help the person realize the predictability of the relationship, and that you are unable to be manipulated.
Don’t allow the person to push boundaries with you. If they call late at night, don’t pick up the phone.
If they threaten to kill themselves, call the police. Don’t allow any responsibility that you do not consent to in being in this person’s life.
Don’t let the person call all of the shots. Say “no” to any activities you don’t want to participate in or contribute to, and be firm.
Discourage any harmful situations, such as doing drugs, engaging in criminal behavior, or other irresponsible behavior.
Say, “For you this may be normal, but for me, this is pushing my boundaries. I’d rather not participate in this.”

Protect your own rights.

People with sociopathic personality patterns may disregard respect for you and your personal rights or violate your rights outright. Stand up for your rights and do not tolerate anyone treating you in any lesser degree than you wish to be treated. Remind yourself that disrespect received from someone else doesn’t reflect any lack on your part, it reflects the problems or insecurities of the other person.
A lack of empathy for other people can contribute to stampeding over other people’s rights. Someone with sociopathic tendencies will often display a high self-appraisal, which may lead them to believe that they can treat others as lower than the self.

Understand your role in their life.

The cause of this disorder is unknown, but biological or genetic factors may play a role. Remember that although it may not be a person's fault that they are a sociopath, this individual is still responsible for their actions, and you do not need to fix those issues or damage your own life by staying around.

Don’t make it your responsibility to “save them” or “change them.” Recognize that change can only happen on their initiative, not yours.

Offer your support and encouragement to any positive activities. This may be praising, taking responsibility, or seeking treatment for drugs. Encourage things around responsibility.

Suggest treatment for addiction.

Many people people with antisocial personality disorder struggle with addiction, mainly with substances. Substance use and addiction can contribute to poor choices and increase risky behaviors. While you may not be able to do much to lessen this person’s behavior, working through addiction can have positive effects and lower overall risk.

There are many treatment options for substance abuse, based on need. Addiction can be treated through outpatient therapy, inpatient treatment, and residential care. Talk to a mental health care provider to see which option is best.

Suggest therapy.

Therapy can help in rewarding positive behaviors and discouraging negative behaviors. Talk therapy in which the person is able to discuss difficulties in childhood or their insecurities can also be helpful.
Often, people with personality disorders refuse therapy or only go when mandated by courts. In the case for people with sociopathic tendencies, therapy can be most helpful for accompanying psychological diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders.
Empathy can be learned.

Through therapy, one can begin to understand and experience empathy with animals, people, and all living things.

What Is Sociopathology?

So·ci·o·path -

– Noun - Psychiatry. a person, as a psychopathic personality, whose behaviour is antisocial and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

Antisocial personality disorder Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Antisocial personality disorder (APD) is a mental disorder defined by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual: "The essential feature for the diagnosis is a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood." Considered essential features of the disorder are deceit and manipulation. Therefore it is essential in making the diagnosis to collect material from sources other than the individual being diagnosed. Also, the individual must be age 18 or older as well as have a documented history of a conduct disorder before the age of 15.

The criteria for the Antisocial Personality Disorder were derived from the Research Diagnostic Criteria developed by Spitzer, Endicott and Robbins (1978). There was concern in the development of the DSM-IV that there was too much emphasis on research data and not enough on the more traditional psychopathic traits such as a lack of empathy, superficial charm, and inflated self appraisal. However field trial data indicated that some of the traits of psychopathy derived from the Psychopathy Checklist developed by Hare et al., 1992, were difficult to assess reliably and thus were not included. Lack of remorse is an example. The antisocial person may express guilt or remorse or offer excuses and rationalizations. However, a history of criminal acts in itself suggests little remorse or guilt.

Diagnostic criteria

Three or more of the following are required:

1. Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviours as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest.

2. Deceitfulness, as indicated by repeatedly lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure

3. Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead

4. Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults

5. Reckless disregard for safety of self or others

6. Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behaviour or honour financial obligations

7. Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another.

The antisocial behaviour must not occur exclusively during an episode of Schizophrenia or a Manic Episode.

Sex differences: According to DSM-IV (in a 1994 publication by the APA), Antisocial Personality disorder is diagnosed in approximately 3% of all males and 1% of all females.

Common characteristics of people with antisocial personality disorder include:

• Persistent lying or stealing

• Recurring difficulties with the law

• Tendency to violate the rights and boundaries of others (property, physical, sexual, emotional, legal)

• Substance abuse

• Aggressive, often violent behaviour; prone to getting involved in fights

• A persistent agitated or depressed feeling (dysphoria)

• Inability to tolerate boredom

• Disregard for the safety of self or others

• A childhood diagnosis of conduct disorders - this is not a symptom but "a history of"

• Lack of remorse, related to hurting others

• Superficial charm

• Impulsiveness

• A sense of extreme entitlement

• Inability to make or keep friends

• Recklessness, impulsivity

• People with a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder often experience difficulties with authority figures.

The National Comorbidity Survey, which used DSM-III-R criteria, found that 5.8 percent of males and 1.2 percent of females showed evidence of a lifetime risk for the disorder. According to DSM-IV, Antisocial Personality disorder is diagnosed in approximately 3% of all males and 1% of all females.

In penitentiaries, the percentage is estimated to be as high as 75 percent. Prevalence estimates within clinical settings have varied from three to 30 percent, depending on the predominant characteristics of the populations being sampled. {Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders} Perhaps not surprisingly, the prevalence of the disorder is even higher in selected populations, such as people in prisons (who include many violent offenders) (Hare 1983). Similarly, the prevalence of ASPD is higher among patients in alcohol or other drug (AOD) abuse treatment programs than in the general population (Hare 1983), suggesting a link between ASPD and AOD abuse and dependence. David Korten also reports research that shows a high proportion of these traits amongst CEOs of major corporations .

Relationship with other mental disorders

Antisocial personality disorder is negatively correlated with all DSM-IV Axis I disorders except

substance abuse disorders. Antisocial personality disorder is most strongly correlated with psychopathy as measured on the Psychopathy Checklist.

The official stance of the American Psychiatric Association as presented in the DSM-IV-TR is that psychopathy and sociopathy are obsolete synonyms for antisocial personality disorder. The World Health Organization takes a similar stance in its ICD-10 by referring to psychopathy, sociopathy, antisocial personality, asocial personality, and amoral personality as synonyms for dissocial personality disorder.

Potential markers

Although antisocial personality disorder cannot be formally diagnosed before age 18, three markers for the disorder, known as the MacDonald Triad , can be found in some children. These are, a longer-than-usual period of bedwetting, cruelty to animals, and pyromania.

It is not known how many children who exhibit these signs grow up to develop antisocial personality disorder, but these signs are often found in the histories of diagnosed adults. Because it is unknown how many children have these symptoms and who do not develop antisocial personality disorder, the predictive value (ie, the usefulness of these symptoms for predicting future antisocial personality disorder) is unclear.

These three traits are now included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV-TR under conduct disorder.

A child who shows signs of antisocial personality disorder may be diagnosed as having either conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder. Not all of these children, however, will grow up to develop antisocial personality disorder.

Criticism of the DSM-IV criteria The DSM-IV confound : some argue that an important distinction has been lost by including both sociopathy and psychopathy together under APD. As Hare et al write in their abstract, "The Axis II Work Group of the Task Force on DSM-IV has expressed concern that antisocial personality disorder (APD) criteria are too long and cumbersome and that they focus on antisocial behaviors rather than personality traits central to traditional conceptions", concluding, "... conceptual and empirical arguments exist for evaluating alternative approaches to the assessment of psychopathy ... our hope is that the information presented here will stimulate further research on the comparative validity of diagnostic criteria for psychopathy; although too late to influence DSM-IV.

The cause of this disorder is unknown, but biological or genetic factors may play a role. However, the statistical correlation between the disorder and biological factors is weak, leading many experts to believe otherwise.

A family history of the disorder — such as having an antisocial parent — increases the chances of developing the condition. A number of environmental factors within the childhood home, school and community, such as an overly punitive home or school environment may also contribute, according to the Mayo Clinic Website.

Robins (1966) found an increased incidence of sociopathic characteristics and alcoholism in the fathers of individuals with antisocial personality disorder. He found that, within such a family, males had an increased incidence of APD, whereas females tended to show an increased incidence of somatization disorder instead.

Bowlby (1944) saw a connection between antisocial personality disorder and maternal deprivation in the first five years of life. Glueck and Glueck (1968) saw indications that the mothers of children who developed this personality disorder tended to display a lack of consistent discipline and affection, and an abnormal tendency to alcoholism and impulsiveness. These factors all contribute to a failure to create a stable and functional home with consistent structure and behavioral boundaries.

Adoption studies support the role of both genetic and environmental contributions to the development of the disorder. Twin studies also indicate an element of hereditability of antisocial behaviour in adults and have shown that genetic factors are more important in adults than in antisocial children or adolescents where shared environmental factors are more important. (Lyons et al., 1995)

33 or 56 Gender Identities? Or more?

The 33 Gender Identities Recognised By The Australian Sex Survey

The acronym "LGBT" was once considered sufficiently representational of non-heterosexual sexuality and gender types. Well, it looks like we're going to need a few more letters. A new Australian sex survey conducted by researchers at The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has listed a whopping 33 options under the question "Which of the following terms do you feel best describes your gender?". Here's the full list, along with definitions of what they represent.

While the fuddy-duddies that run our country continue to wrestle over concepts like gay marriage, Australian gender identity continues to expand exponentially. According to the latest Australian Sex Survey, there are at least 33 terms for "gender" that Australians now use to identify themselves. These range from "genderfluid" (someone who does not identify entirely with either the female or male genders) to neutrois (a non-binary gender identity which is considered to be a neutral or null gender.)

  1. Woman: A person born as a female, and who identifies as female.
  2. Man: A person born as a male, and who identifies as a male.
  3. Transgender Man: A person who was assigned female at birth, but now identifies as a man. Some trans people choose to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Others prefer not to, but still identify as a different gender.
  4. Transgender Woman: A person who was assigned male at birth, but who identifies as a woman. As above, some trans people choose to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Others prefer not to, but still identify as a different gender.
  5. Trans person: This can mean transsexual or transgender. A transsexual is a person who emotionally and psychologically feels that they belong to the opposite sex.
  6. Trans Man: A trans man is someone who was assigned female at birth, but now identifies as a man.
  7. Trans Woman: A person who was assigned male at birth, but who identifies as a woman
  8. Female to Male: This term is often abbreviated to ‘FTM’ and refers to a transsexual or a transgender man.
  9. Male to Female: This term is often abbreviated to ‘FTM’ and refers to a transsexual or a transgender female.
  10. Transsexual: A person who emotionally and psychologically feels that they belong to the opposite sex. Transsexuals are people who transition from one sex to another, usually through dress, hormone therapy, etc.
  11. Cisgender: A person who identifies with the gender of which they were born. For example, if someone is born as a female and identifies as a woman.
  12. Cis Female: Cis is short for cisgender. So a cisgender female is a female who identifies as a woman.
  13. Cis Male: Cis is short for cisgender. A cisgender male is a male who identifies as a man. Gender Non-Conforming: A person who does not identify with either the male of female genders.
  14. None Gender: A person who does not identify with any gender in particular.
  15. Non-Binary: A person who does not identify entirely with either the female or male genders. They may identify somewhere on a spectrum.
  16. Neutrois: Neutrois is a non-binary gender identity which is considered to be a neutral or null gender.
  17. Genderfluid: A person who does not identify entirely with either the female or male genders.
  18. Genderqueer: An overarching term used to describe people who do not identify exclusively as either male or female.
  19. Demigender: This term, (demi means half) is an umbrella term for nonbinary gender identities that have a partial connection to a certain gender.
  20. Demigirl: A person (can also be called a demiwoman or a demifemale) who identifies partially with being a woman or has feminine characteristics. They may have been assigned female as birth, but they could also have been born as a male.
  21. Demiboy: A person (can also be called a demiman or demimale) who identifies partially with being a man or masculine characteristics. They may have been assigned male at birth, but they could also have been born as a female.
  22. Agender: This literally means ‘without gender’, so a person who doesn’t identify with any gender.
  23. Intergender: Intergender people have a gender identity that is in the middle between the binary genders of female and male, and may be a mix of both.
  24. Intersex: A person who is born with the reproductive anatomy of both a man and a woman. For example, they might appear to be female on the outside, but have mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. These people were previously referred to as hermaphrodites, but that term is considered rude and outdated.
  25. Pangender: A person who identifies as more than one gender.
  26. Poligender: Translates to ‘many genders’. A person who identifies as more than one gender.
  27. Omnigender: Translates to ‘all genders’. A person who identifies as more than one gender.
  28. Bigender: Translates to ‘two genders’. A person who identifies as both male and female genders. Some bigender people have two distinct male and female personas.
  29. Androgyne: A person who doesn’t identify with either gender. They are both feminine and masculine.
  30. Androgyny: The combination of masculine and feminine characteristics.
  31. Androgyny can apply to many things - someone’s gender identity, sexual identity, and even fashion.
  32. Third Gender: People who identify as neither a man nor a woman. Some cultures refer to some of their people by a third gender. For example, in Samoafa’afafines are male at birth, but if a family had more boys than girls and needed more women to help with housework, they male children would be raised as a fa’afafine.
  33. Trigender: Translates to three genders. A person who shifts between the male, female and third genders.

While the list above does appear to contain some overlap (can anyone explain the difference between "Pangender", "Poligender" and "Omnigender"?) it's clear that sexual/gender identity is far more nuanced and complex than "LGBT" or "LGBTIQ" would have us believe.
